Toyota Innova: Review by Khulla Panga

This is a personal review since I have tried all the other cars that we have listed below in this article. This article is not at all biased with any of the manufactures listed below.

Toyota Innova is really a nice car compared to other cars of the same segment, I am comparing it with

Chevrolet Tavera
TATA Safari
Mahindra Scorpio

This car is no doubt better than its competitors, first of all I don’t call it a SUV but it’s a Car, really. We own a 8 seater G4 model since we don’t find V model worth it in terms of price, V model is approx Rs. 1,20,000/- costlier than the G4 one but don’t have the facilities worth that money.

Innova is definitely more comfortable, better pickup (Scorpio also have a nice pickup), better flexibility (which is definite with a Japanese technology), better handling and nice aesthetic.

But I feel that there is lot of improvement needed in this car. The showroom from which I bough this car claimed that the car will give an economics of 14 Km/liter but that is not there, even after running on the best roads with the normal speed and the best fuel, the car made it to 12 km/liter. Secondly, a 6th high speed gear is needed in the car. When you drive it to 100 Km/hour in 5th gear, the engine sounds like it needs the next gear and the engine sound increases as you increase the speed, which I have never notices in the CRDi engine in the Hyundai Accent. Then the engine becomes normal, when you drive to 120 Km/hr +.

No doubt, the car is the best in its segment, but these things needs to be worked out. For Indian Auto market at least, economics of the vehicle is very important. While the fuel prices are raising like anything, in the near future there will be a much demand for the fuel efficient cars.

[...] I read I an news today that Toyota has plans to expand in India at a rate of 10 times what it is doing now. Well I’m happy with the Toyota Innova I have but the not at all happy with the increasing traffic in Gurgaon. What will happen if all the automobile companies will grow at this rate. There are flyover and expressways being made at the moment if I think about the traffic being 10 times by now, I will definitely reach my office in 4 hours which I do in 25 min. [...]

[...] Its great that my height is 5’7” so I could fit in the car. If my height would have been 6 feets, I could not fit in the car. The legroom is so less that 6 people with good height cannot fit together. The engine is no doubt the best I have ever experienced from any vehicle of this segment, even better then our Toyota Innova G4. Pickup is superb. Breaking is so so. Gear lever us tight as jeeps, steering also not as good as Innova. Not at all a comfortable car. I can drive the Innova 1000 Km a day but I can never do that with Scorpio. Also the worst part is that the top model on road will costs more than 9 Lakhs which in not worth it. I would prefer to take another Innova V model rather. [...]
