The Distance Education Council (DEC) allowed all premier institutes in the country to offer online courses. Now IITs and IIMs can design online courses and can set up the virtual campus for a vide range of students. This move is seen as a major boost in the distance education and open learning system. India’s premier institute Indian Institute of Science (IIS) is already running an online course in collaboration with a foreign institute. Seven IITs and IISs are collaborating for the National programme of Technology Enhanced Learning on a trial basis by developing curriculum based video and web courses.
