Ford has unveiled today the new Ford Figo which will be sold on the Indian market and built in the expanded integrated manufacturing facility near Chennai. Ford is spending $500 million on the plant to double its annual capacity to 200,000 units and to add a lower-emissions paint plant. Ford Motor Company unveiled a new small car at a press conference in Delhi, India on Wednesday. The subcompact, which is called the Figo, will be produced in India for the Indian market, as well as for export to other Asian countries and Africa.

All in all, the Figo isn’t an overly radical design – it is in keeping with large hatches available from other manufacturers in the country – which is a good thing. The Indian populace should find ready acceptance to the design. Interiors seem fresh as well from the little that the released images show. The Figo will be built at the newly expanded Chennai Plant, where another four nameplates are already produced. While there is zero intention of exporting it the western markets, there are plans for export in the region. Oh, and in case you were interested, Figo is Italian slang for “cool.”
